"The Midwifery Museum project is a self-sustaining legacy of midwifery and midwifery practise, wherein the culture of midwifery is celebrated with history and artefacts including books, equipment, exhibitions and social aspects of midwives and midwifery over the years."
- Elinor Clarke, Founder and Director.
International Confederation of Midwives in Toronto, 2017
The midwifery museum is a long term project. Starting with building the midwifery collection the intention is to provide a permanent home for celebrating midwives and midwifery. The midwifery story is not just about the medicalisation of childbirth, fundamentally midwifery is about being 'with women' and promoting health and wellbeing for women and their families.
The midwifery collection explores the curiosity around the Art and Science of midwifery. The midwifery collections are curated by midwives for midwives. The collection will provide a unique learning environment for exploring midwifery culture.
A midwifery museum whereby the public can gain insight into the role of midwives where history meets information and evidence (materials) providing knowledge of the ancient profession. A midwifery museum to engage midwives in celebrating their culture, heritage and care and enabling student midwives to explore aspects of midwifery.
A grand opening of the museum was due to coincide with Coventry City of Culture 2021. Due to the global Covid 19 pandemic the Midwifery Museum will now be accessed online only. A number of pop up exhibitions are planned - starting with the Baby Lifeline 40th Anniversary " Celebration of Life" Service at Coventry Cathedral on Sunday 7th November
