Midwifery is a proud and honourable profession. Globally midwives are fundamental to improving health outcomes for women and their families, yet the role of the midwife is sadly not well understood.
Here at the Midwifery Museum, we aim to capture the culture and development of the midwifery practice from its birth, present and future. We work to preserve and enhance knowledge, understanding, and survival of the midwifery profession.
Our ambition was to have a grand opening of a permanent exhibition in Coventry (WhiteFriars Gate) to coincide with Coventry City of Culture 2021. However due to the global pandemic and not being able to fund/acquire premises the midwifery museum remains online only for the time being
Whilst there is a number of places that midwifery related memorabilia can be found, including the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) Heritage Collection at the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (RCOG), The Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) and the Welcome Foundation in London, there is currently nowhere in the UK whereby the Art and Science and culture of midwifery is celebrated. The aim of this collection is to give midwives back their own story - bringing to life the profession, culture and values that is midwifery.
From the very core of the midwifery practice, to famous midwives throughout the ages, the Midwifery Museum boasts an array of images, equipment, artefacts, and stories to truly bring the evolution of the midwifery to life.
The midwifery collection is currently only available to the public on this website
We are seeking funding for accommodation and support.
If you are a midwife and wish to access the collection please contact us via email.
