Midwife - a short word. But what is a midwife? and what do midwives do?
Perceptions of midwives and the role of the midwife may be influenced by a number of agents including the media. Television programmes such as Call the Midwife; Emma Willis "delivering babies" and One Born Every Minute can contribute to stereotypes and undervalue the role of the midwife. Midwifery is not a field of nursing or a branch of medicine but a unique profession with its own role, responsibilities and culture. Here at the Midwifery Museum we will curate an exhibition of the role of the midwife, blog and promote the role of the midwife.
The midwifery profession includes clinical practice; education; research; consultants; specialists and professional midwifery advocates to name a few.
Student midwives quickly learn that babies are born and pizza is delivered - yet for years students have counted their 'deliveries'.
International Day of the Midwife is celebrated on May 7th each year. Building upon the first Day of the Midwife in 1991, the midwifery profession celebrate with a variety of events, fund raising and activities. Contact the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) for further information for this year.
The Midwifery Museum will explore the role of the midwife.
